Pet households needs disinfectants to keep the home safe for humans and animals. However, many household disinfectants are not formulated for pet households contains phenol.

What is phenol a concern?

Phenol is a concern to cats, dogs, rabbit and small animals because it can cause burns, affect major organs and even cause death. Pets can come into contact with phenol through ingestion, contact on skin or through the paws.

Symptoms include irritation or burns of the mouth and tongue, excessive vomit or salivate, breathing difficulties, hyperthermia or even shock.

Identifying phenol

There is a simple way to check if your disinfectant contains phenol.

Pour your disinfectant into water.

If it turns milky, it indicates presence of phenol.
